CHARACTERISTICS
It is a perennial herb with long leaves supported by long pesioles that reach 60 cm to 1 meter in height. Although its origin is African, it has multiplied throughout the planet, showing a great capacity for adaptation and giving rise to numerous subspecies. It is seen growing wild throughout the southern Caribbean area of Costa Rica.
USAGE
The cooked leaves and stems are consumed as vegetables in both Africa and the Caribbean and delicious dishes and stews are prepared. Its flavor is very similar to spinach. The tubers are not used for food.
MEDICINAL USAGE
It is a very good source of iron, calcium, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and vitamin C. It is known that due to its molecular structure it is an excellent brain oxygenator, helps improve memory and concentration and is an important ally for treat conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and senile dementia.

Es una hierba perenne con hojas largas soportadas por largos pesiolos que alcanza de 60 cms a 1 metro de altura. Aunque su origen es africano se ha multiplicado por todo el planeta mostrando una gran capacidad de adaptación y dando origen a numerosas subespecies. Se observa creciendo silvestre en toda la zona del Caribe Sur de Costa Rica.
USOS
Las hojas y tallos cocinados son consumidos como vegetales tanto en África como en el Caribe y se preparan deliciosos platillos y guisos . Su sabor es muy similar a la espinaca. Los tubérculos no se utilizan como alimento.
USOS MEDICINALES
Es una fuente muy buena de hierro, calcio, ácido fólico, potasio, magnesio, vitamina A y vitamina C. Se sabe que por su esructura molecular es un excelente oxigenador cerebral, ayuda a mejorar la memoria y la concentración y es un importante aliado para tratar condiciones como el Alzheimer, el Parkinson y la demencia senil.
