La zarzaparrilla es una liana que crece en la selva, subiendo el suelo del bosque a la cubierta. Hay más de 200 especies de Smilax en el mundo siendo la zarzaparrilla la más conocida como ginseng tropical.
USOS MEDICINALES
La raíz ayuda en el tratamiento contra la anemia y actúa como un diurético para purificar los sistemas urinario y circulatorio. Las saponinas se utilizan como un agente para la bio-disponibilidad y para mejorar la potencia y el efecto de otras hierbas. Los flavonoides en zarzaparrilla tienen una función de modulación inmune y actividad de protección del hígado.
Los esteroides sarsasapogenina y esmilageniná tienen la ca- pacidad para tratar la demencia senil, la disfunción cognitiva y la enfermedad de Alzheimer. También ha sido utilizada en el tratamiento de la sífilis. Varias empresas han comenzado a producir una bebida de la raíz, similar a la cerveza de jengibre.

Sarsaparilla is a vine which grows in the rainforest, climbing the forest floor to the canopy. There are more than 200 species of Smilax world wide with Sarsaparilla being best known as tropical ginseng.
MEDICINAL USAGE
The root aids in the treatment of anemia and acts as a diuretic to purify the urinary and circulatory systems.
The saponins are used as an agent for bioavailability and to en- hance the power and effect of other herbs. Flavonoids in sarsaparilla have immune modulation and liver protective activities. The steroids sarsasapogenin and smilagenin have the ability to treat senile dementia, cognitive dysfunction, and Alzhei- mer’s disease. Sarsaparilla has long been used in the treat- ment of syphilis.
Several companies have started to produce a soda drink from the sarsaparilla root, similar to ginger beer or root beer.
