CHARACTERISTICS
Akee is a tree which grows to 10 -20 m. The fruit can be fried, boiled, or eaten raw. It is common in Cahuita’s kitchen. The edible part is an aril.
Warning! The fruit is toxic before it ripens and also when it is overripe. The ripe fruit will open up naturally. Eating the seeds or the pinkish area inside the fruit results in nauseas, vomiting and may end with coma or death. The toxic effects are produced by hypoglycin A and B.
USAGE
Traditionally, a whole fruit is used to wash clothes because it contains a soap substitute.
MEDICINAL USAGE
A juice of the leaves is used as a remedy in ophthalmology for conjunctivitis. Akee also acts as a cure for epilepsy and yellow fever.

Akee es un árbol que crece hasta 10 -20 m. La fruta puede prepararse frita, hervida, o puede comerse cruda. La parte comestible es un arilo. El Akee es común en la cocina de Cahuita.
