It grows naturally along streams and marshy areas but in Costa Rica is popular in gardens because of its medicinal use.
MEDICINAL USAGE
Infusion of the flowers is an efficient sudorific and helps in the case of flu, cold, fever, cough and bronchitis. Juice of the leaves has a purgative effect. The leaves, bark and root, in external application, treat skin problems, relieves hemorrhoids and pharyngitis.

Crece naturalmente cerca de quebradas y zonas pantanosas. En Costa Rica es popular en los jardines por su uso medicinal.
USO MEDICINAL
La infusión de las flores es un eficaz sudorífico y ayuda en caso de gripe, resfriado, fiebre, tos y catarros bronquiales. El zumo de las hojas tiene efecto purgante. Las hojas, la corteza y la raíz, en aplicación externa, tratan las afecciones de la piel, alivian las hemorroides y faringitis.
