CHARACTERISTICS

Monkey’s Hand is a native to Central America that thrives in gaps of the rainforest. Their fruits play an important role as food for bats and some birds. Their finger-like fruit spikes are made of hundreds of tightly packed flowers or fruits.

USAGE

The leaves not only provide tablecloths and food wrapping material.

MEDICINAL USAGE

Leaves rubbed on the body are used to repel ticks and may be applied directly to swollen sores. In the Philippines, the fresh leaves are applied to the surface of abscesses and the juice of leaves can be applied to the eyes for conjunctivitis. In French Guiana, the plant is a remedy for tapeworms. In Africa, it is used in a poultice for swellings, boils and burns. Juice used as eardrops for earaches.

The juice is taken to stimulate menses, milk production in mothers, and to promote urination. Decoction of leaves or roots used for jaundice, malaria, urinary problems, syphilis, gonorrhea, constipation and stomach aches.

CARACTERÍSTICAS

La Santa María es nativa de América Central y crece en las lagunas de la selva tropical. Sus frutos constituyen un alimento para murciélagos y algunas aves. Sus picos de frutas en forma de dedos están hechos de cientos de flores o frutos apretados.

USOS MEDICINALES

Frotar las hojas sobre el cuerpo sirve para repeler garrapatas y tratar llagas hinchadas. En Filipinas, aplican las hojas sobre los abscesos y usan el jugo como tratamiento para la conjuntivitis. En la Guayana francesa la utilizan como remedio para las tenias. En África la emplean en forma de cataplasma para las inflamaciones, forúnculos y quemaduras; el jugo, en gotas, sirve para tratar dolores de oído. El jugo sirve para estimular la menstruación, la producción de leche materna y promueve la micción. Decocción de hojas o raíces son utilizadas para la ictericia, la malaria, problemas urinarios, sífilis, gonorrea, estreñimiento y dolores de estómago.
