CHARACTERISTICS
It is a herbaceous plant that reaches 50 cm in height. Its name probably comes from the position of its leaves in pairs. It grows in shady places. Succulent stems and shiny heart-shaped leaves. From the point of union of the leaves, spike-shaped inflorescences emerge, typical of all Piperaceae. Seeds are formed from them. It blooms all year round. If the leaves are rubbed it releases a mustard smell.
USAGE
The entire plant is edible. Raw or cooked. It is also known that the leaves are used to make a soft drink.
MEDICINAL USAGE
In traditional Caribbean medicine it is used for abdominal pain, abscesses, fatigue, colic, tiredness, gout, rheumatism, headache and kidney conditions. Its analgesic properties are recognized and its capacity as an antibiotic is currently being studied.

Es una planta herbácea que alcanza 50 cms de altura. Su nombre proviene probablemente por la posición de sus hojas en par. Crece en lugares con sombra. Tallos sucuculentos y hojas brillantes en forma de corazón. Del punto de unión de las hojas surjen las inflorescencias en forma de espigas, típicas de todas las piperáceas. De ellas se forman las semillas. Floece todo el año. Si se frotan las hojas emite un olor a mostaza.
USOS
La planta completa es comestible. Cruda o cocinada. También se sabe que con las hojas se hace un refresco.
USOS MEDICINALES
En la medicina tradicional caribeña es utilizada para los dolores abdominales, abscesos, cansancio, cólicos, cansancio, gota, reumatismo, dolor de cabeza y afecciones renales. Se le reconocen propiedades analgésicas y se estudia actualmente su capacidad como antibiótico.
