CHARACTERISTICS

It is a leafy tree that reaches 13 meters in height. It produces berries that release their seeds when they ripen. This seed is actually nutmeg, which is highly valued as a spice. Nutmeg is not actually a nut, it is actually the endosperm of the seed of the tree. The seed in turn contains a casing that dries, separates and gives rise to a by-product called Mace, which is also used as a spice. It is one of the few trees that produces two sub-products that are used in gastronomy even in different ways.


USAGE

The best known use is as a seasoning for different dishes depending on the region where it is produced. The ripening of the fruit takes around nine months from birth and is observable on the tree.

MEDICINAL USAGE

Its properties are recognized to reduce inflammation related to heart disease. Reduces the risk of blood clots and lowers blood pressure.In low doses of less than 10 grams it is not toxic. Higher concentrations are toxic, capable of producing undesirable effects and even death.

The leafs and the bark of the tree are used to make essential oils.

CARACTERÍSTICAS

Es un árbol frondoso que alcanza los 13 metros de altura. Produce unas bayas que cuando maduran sueltan las semillas. Esta semilla es propiamente la nuez moscada la cual es muy apreciada como especia. La nuez moscada en realidad no es una nuez, en realidad es el endospermo de la semilla del árbol. La semilla a su vez contiene una envoltura que se seca, se separa  y da origen a un subproducto que se llama Macis, el cual es utilizado como especia también. Es de los pocos árboles que producen dos sub productos que se utilizan en la gastronomia incluso de diferente manera.

USOS 

El uso más conocido es como sazonador para diferentes platos según la región donde se produce. La maduración del fruto tarde alrededor de nueve meses desde que nace y es observable en el árbol.

USOS MEDICINALES

Se reconocen sus propiedades para reducir la inflamación relacionada con enfermedades cardiacas.  Disminuye el riesgo de coágulos sanguíneso y baja la presión arterial.

En dosis bajas menores a 10 gramos no es tóxica. Concentraciones mayores son tóxicos capaces de producir efectos indeseables e incluso la muerte.

Las hojas y la corteza son  utilizadas para elaborar aceites esenciales.
