CARACTERISTICS

The blackwood is popular along roadsides and is found bordering coffee and cocoa plantations as a fence. It grows up to 10 m. Its English name indicates the plant’s previous use. Traditionally, the leaves were boiled with corn, dried, and used as bait for rodents.

MEDICINAL USES

Maceration of fresh leaves is used externally to treat skin conditions and lice. It is particularly useful for insect bites but also heals rashes, boils, pimples, and burns.

The leaves and bark have antipyretic and antiseptic properties. A decoction of the leaves can be applied as a compress or taken orally. Ground bark is used against snakebites. The infusion of the flowers has antidiarrheal properties. The flowers can be eaten with eggs and onions after boiling.

El madero negro es popular por las carreteras y se lo encuentra bordeando a modo de cerco en las plantaciones de café y cacao. Crece hasta 10 m. Su nombre inglés indica el uso anterior de esta planta. Tradicionalmente las hojas hervidas junto con maíz, se secaban y se utilizaban como un cebo para roedores.

USOS MEDICINALES

La maceración de las hojas frescas es utilizada externamente para tratar las afecciones de piel y los piojos. Es especialmente útil para las picaduras pero cura también sarpullidos, furúnculos, granos y quemaduras.

Las hojas y la corteza tienen la propiedad antifebril y antiséptica. La decocción de las hojas se puede aplicar como una compresa o por vía oral. La corteza molida es usada contra las mordeduras de serpientes. La infusión de las flores tiene la propiedad antidiarréica. Las flores se pueden comer con huevos y cebolla luego de ser hervidas.
