CHARACTERISTICS
The latex of the plant contains large quantities of cardiac gly- cosides, making the leaves and pods toxic for sheep and other large mammals and possibly humans (if you ingested large amounts). The buds and young leaves, flower buds and im- mature fruits are all edible, however, it is important to make sure they are well washed and cooked before eating, because otherwise they are still toxic.
USAGE
Both the fiber and silk have been historically used by American Indians for cordage and textiles. They also used this plant as food and medicine.
Many have tried in vain to obtain the latex. Instead, the silk can be used to fill mattresses and pillows and has commercial potential. Also the inner bark of the stems has commercial potential as fiber and is considering its use.
MEDICINAL USAGE
It has been used in cases of pneumonia and as a diuretic, emetic and expectorant. It is poisonous, especially the milky juice containing the glycoside asclepiadina.

El látex de la planta contiene grandes cantidades de glucósidos cardíacos, siendo las hojas y vainas, tóxicas para las ovejas, otros mamíferos grandes y, posiblemente, para los seres humanos (aunque tendría que ser consumida en grandes dosis). Los brotes, hojas jóvenes, botones florales y frutos inmaduros, son comestibles pero es importante asegurarse de que estén bien lavados y cocidos, pues de otro modo son todavía tóxicos.
USOS
Tanto la fibra como la seda han sido usadas históricamente por los indígenas americanos para cordeles y textiles. Tam- bién usaban esta planta como alimento y medicina.
Se ha tratado en vano de aprovechar el látex. La seda tiene potencial comercial y puede usarse como relleno de colchones o almohadas. La corteza interior de los tallos tiene potencial comercial como fibra y se está estudiando su posible uso.
USOS MEDICINALES
Se ha usado en casos de neumonía y como diurético, emético y expectorante. Es venenosa, sobre todo el jugo lechoso que contiene el heterósido asclepiadina.
